EPPING FOREST LIVE PERFORMANCE REVIEWED ON BLAST
MAGAZINE Nr.2: “Epping Forest followed suite and presented the audience with
their very sober and disquieting Black Metal with Scandinavian influences,
playing the undoubtedly best performance of the whole event.”
EPPING FOREST LIVE PERFORMANCE REVIEWED ON BACK TO THE GRAVE WEBZINE:”
The bands that followed played approximately 45 minutes (rather good for a
festival with so many bands), but they all had a lousy guitar sound. EPPING
FOREST started playing at 19h00 and, despite the shittty sound (as a
consequence of which the sound came across slightly emptier), the band
managed to entice the audience with their fierce discharge of blood and Black
Metal power. Freshly emerged from a concert on the eve of Caos Emergente,
EPPING FOREST played with one guitar (instead of two) and with no bass, as
with the last two concerts, which represented an additional dimension of
challenge to the band. The audience were banging their heads already at the
sound of the band’s sound-check, which was a constant through the evening –
and, as an intro opened up the band’s performance, there was moshing around
and banging of a myriad heads from the stage through to the sound table. The
mosh pit was by this stage sober. The band played their usual set-list with a
minimal alteration here and there and the general sound enhanced the drums,
so it came as no surprise that the mosh pit was so agitated, as Menthor’s
drums were fast and brutal, aggressive as aggressive they could be. The
keyboardist’s discrete presence was again confirmed, and Noctis Lunaris’
melodies still fit right into the band’s aggressiveness, providing their
music with a somewhat exotic touch. Azrael brings forth the apocalyptic
voices of Damnation and proves with each concert what a natural born frontman
he is. EPPING FOREST were, in my (not so) humble opinion, for their stage
presence and great music, the band of the evening – alongside BLEEDING
DISPLAY.”

About this GIG:
“EPPING FOREST LIVE PERFORMANCE REVIEWED ON BACK TO THE GRAVE WEBZINE: Hostilities were due start at approximately 20.00, but
as with every other metal event in Portugal, it did not start until 22.00.
Felgueiras-based Black Metal band EPPING FOREST started playing at 22.20,
after a few minutes with the sound-check and whatnot. By the time of their
performance, there were not many people at the venue, but their performance
was quite an achievement: starting from the end of BLEEDING DISPLAY’s
performance (who followed next), people started to spread and/or disappear.
As for EPPING FOREST, they were bold enough to play live without 2 band
members, notably Abraxis (guitars) and Aenima Seraphitus (Bass), who were
forced to be absent for different reasons. Throughout the performance, they
hardly spoke, but played lots. The sound was relatively audible, but the
keyboard sound was completely freaked out. I am inclined to think that the
only reason why there was no moshing was because the audience was so scant.
The general view of the concert is that of a well-played, coordinate and very
coherent performance. The band members seemed to know what they were doing,
which certainly contributed to the globally positive concert. Starting with Incantations of the Gates, playing Epping Forest, Source of Fateful Forces
and Battle of Ragnarok, EPPING
FOREST consolidated their sound image. I would say the audience went a bit
wilder with The Sphinx’s Riddle, my
absolutely favourite. Devouring Soul
finished off their performance and I am certainly waiting for the next
opportunity to see these guys live. The members who drew more attention were
the drummer Menthor (also in the ranks of MORBIUS and WAR BLASPHEMY), who
played at his best – and seemed never to grow tired of playing, presenting an
exquisite double bass technique and well thought-out blast beats, and the
vocalist Azrael, whose voice is ever better.
The guitarist Mystic Cosmos is evil impersonated on stage and Noctis Lunaris
(keyboardist) has a very discrete presence. Overall, this was perhaps the
best EPPING FOREST concert I have ever been fortunate to see live.” (photos)

The grandiose finale METAL FORCE
EPPING FOREST+HUMANART+MORBIUS
About this GIG:
“Our performance on Saturday the 12th was a bit weak. Bearing the
precarious sound conditions in mind, the band had a hard time trying to
define/tune their sound, in an effort to make it audible to the venue. It was
so weak that we at times could not even hear ourselves on stage much less the
other band members. Notwithstanding, we have once again been consecrated by
an audience who was more than worthy of a decent performance, whatever the
conditions. And so we did our best to present them with our very own EF Black
Metal. Thus leaving on-stage problems aside, we set off for another discharge
of pure brutality (we do admit, though, that it was comparatively reduced,
probably due to a bad choice of set-list order). The rather still audience
adhered every now and then with massive banging of the head. This
participation in the finale of the contest is a motive for contentment in our
eyes. We are proud to have reached so high, getting
a first place midway through the contest and managing to get a level below in
the finale: Second.
I gather there is not much to be said about this performance. It
unfortunately did not come up to our expectations and too many external
factors upset the band and the contest itself.” (photos)

EPPING FOREST + GRINDER + KORMOSS
About this GIG:
“AGAINST EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE! (Photos) The band’s performance last
Saturday(22.03.2003) was definitely the most brutal one to date. It really
felt like the band members were more loose, fearless and completely apart
from the partial nervous wreck we were in in previous concerts. We
consequently presented our ever-supporting audience with a very deign concert (HAIL
ALL!). That venue was a stage for unleashing resonant
visual Khaos. This concert also represented our official welcome to Abraxis,
the new guitarist of Epping Forest. His part in the whole was sublime, to say
the least, revealing how perfectly integrated into the group’s spirit he
really is, enhancing his instinct for cohesion. And that is the more worthy
of praise because he is officially a band member for the past 30 moons only,
this having therefore been his first live performance. Another reason for
this being a very special concert to us is the fact that all the innuendo and
rumours, bad omens and alike conjured and set up against Epping
Forest have proved unsuccessful, for they far from affected the
audience who watched us and two other good Portuguese bands, notably GRINDER
(the other band playing for the contest ~ thanks for the all help and the
best of luck to you guys!) and KORMOSS (the headliners). According to some of
those who were at the venue, our performance was rather unexpected (regarding
quality) and the best proof of that is the FIRST place we
managed to achieve in this second phase of the METAL FORCE contest. The
score was 122, 3 points (116,5 jury alone + 5,8 from the audience).
To all those who are still sceptical about EPPING FOREST’s
capacity to write music and stand as a pillar stone for the future, we would
just like to leave a very clear and particularly discrete message: fuck you
all! The very same way we shut a bloody load of filthy mouths that evening
is the very same way we shall shut many more. Speak only of what you do
know. We thoroughly enjoyed that evening, making complete Khaos and Brutality
out of it, in the name of all those who went to watch the band play. It does make us feel proud of having been able to
play before an honest, anti-poser audience. Hail to the true (i. e., strictly limited but true) Portuguese underground! We hereby once more leave
our sincerest appreciation to the audience who sailed across storms and tides
to arrive at 4Play (and we are talking about 130 people here). Even
though they were slightly more quiet that night, they have still managed to
inspire us with confidence in our music and TRUE support, which was rather crucial for our memorable
performance. We gave you our best… Thanks!” (photos)

SLEAZE + NECROSE + EPPING FOREST
About this GIG:
“EPPING FOREST made it through the unknown, unsteady waters in which
they had been swimming over the last couple of months. Its tides were chiefly
characteristic for their diversity: from recent line-up instability (which
the band were on the brink of overcoming) through to rows with the police
(and the subsequent cancellation of the few rehearsals we could actually play
until the day of the concert) and bad weather conditions (not so much for the
rain as for the damage it caused). As a result, there seemed to hover a
certain wave of nervous breakdowns over every creature in the band. But it
all ended up not representing an obstacle of any kind. In addition to being
merely temporary (and insignificant in the course of time), the band’s
excellent performance at the contest came to prove that EPPING FOREST are
alive and kicking. The total audience was somewhat below the average
attendance rate (60 to 70 people), but that did not prevent them from moshing
till Chaos at the Mosh Pit. We were definitely satisfied with the reactions and
grateful for the night the audience transmitted us so much power and energy,
vitality and anger. This motivated us into an excellent performance which
rendered us the 5th place (71,2%) and we are eternally grateful
for that. By the end of the two remaining sessions, EPPING FOREST got the 5th
place and was one of the 12 bands chosen (say elected) to play the second
phase.” (photos)

REQUIEM LAUS + EPPING FOREST
About this GIG:
“One month after the pre-presentation concert, all we have to say is
that reactions are still being excellent, way beyond our expectations. The
natural exception(s) being the fact that some assholes once again tried to
discredit the band’s name (the very people who criticised the band so harshly
were not even there. Their absence and behaviour only proves how fake these
people with lack of own personality are). However, we consider it our duty to
inform these people that they have FAILED! Keep trying,
dumb asses!
On the other
hand, there has been a considerable lot of people motivating us to take our band
further and to perform live more often.
For all
those who keep asking us about details on the promo CD (such as the release
date), we can only say we are sorry that recordings had to be delayed for so
long, but we will not be able to start recording and release the promo CD at
the moment. However, for all those who have always supported us and showed
interest in the band, we decided to put two MP3 rehearsal tracks (recorded in
March 2002) on the Internet, so that you can listen to a bit of Epping Forest
when and where you feel like. (photos)
We sincerely thank you for your support, and please: be patient…”
